When searching for free yoga resources, the video-sharing behemoth YouTube is a good place to start. But type “yoga” into YouTube’s search bar, and you get back more than eight million results. Many of these are one-off videos rather than easy-to-follow programs for beginners. There are, however, two free yoga programs that are worth checking out: Yoga for Dummies and Dr. Melissa West’s channel.
“I don’t have time” can never be an excuse for skipping a workout. This fast-paced routine is proof that you can pack a lot of core shaping into just six minutes. But don’t let the length of the workout fool you; this routine’s no joke. Yogi star Kathryn Budig leads you through a tough mix of pulsing leg lifts (tiny movements with major impact), bicycle kicks, and more. (via Gaiam)
You too can wear the ring I have been wearing for 10 years-- it says "Value" and it is made by a special pawn shop in Brooklyn-- out of other people's melted down pawns-- and covered in gold. I'll engrave a special message for you so you'll remember your connection to all people, to the project, and how that gives you more value than you can even handle!

Lastly, your yoga clothes should be comfortable on and off the mat. Yogiwear is designed to fit comfortably around your skin, removing any distractions that your clothing might be creating. Our clothing is also designed to make any workout better and easier. The fabric is entirely breathable, so it won’t get in the way of any strenuous workout you have.
Expert recommendation: Sri Dharma's Mittra's series of classes, like this one, which cover Asana, Yoga Nidra, Pranayama and meditation. "Sri Dharma worked for close to a year exploring and sequencing the Asana classes in particular. They represent his most current thinking on Asana practice as of now." —Adam Frei, Program Manager of Dharma Yoga New York Center
Crank Up Core Strength: an athletic, dynamic routine with some arm balances that will tire you out. I think it’s best suited for someone who is already in good shape but is trying out yoga for the first time. The flow requires two blocks, which can stabilize you in poses when one hand is on the ground or help improve overall alignment. Until I got a great set of cork blocks, I used big, heavy books instead.

The standard thickness of a regular yoga mat is 4–5 millimeters. Travel mats are generally 3 millimeters or less, and thick mats are 6–9 millimeters. The type of yoga you practice can help you figure out which thickness is right for you. Instructor Jane Witzenburg advises, “If you are doing a lot of lunges, use a thicker mat. If you are doing more balancing postures, use a thinner mat.”
It’s best to clean your yoga mat at least once a week to prevent staining and buildup. Use water and gentle cleansers like lemon juice or dish soap, but avoid abrasive sponges. Wipe down excess moisture and let your mat dry away from direct sunlight or high temperatures, which can accelerate the breakdown of natural materials like rubber. When in doubt, check your mat manufacturer’s care guidelines.
I was introduced to the B Mat recently by Halfmoon Yoga Products. I have to say I am very impressed! The B Mat is made of 100% rubber (both natural and synthetic), without using harsh chemicals, finishes or sealants. It feels durable, is surprisingly light and has incredible grip in both wet and dry conditions. The surface is a pleasant texture, and the sturdy rubber provides great padding under knees and elbows. It also isn't as heavy as other home practice mats with similar padding and durability. A solid all-around yoga mat!
On an inhale, raise your arms straight up above your head and bring your palms together. Bend your knees slightly, and on the exhale, hinge at your hips to fold forward, lengthening your spine the whole way down as you reach your hands for the floor. Bring either your fingertips or palms to the floor, fingers in line with your toes. Slowly straighten your legs as much as you can without straining them.
Hatha yoga is the root of the physical yoga practice and most modern-day styles. Hatha yoga is not an exercise but rather the practice of physical postures, or asanas, which drive physical energy. Get familiar with yoga or revisit the foundations with this collection of Hatha yoga videos. Open your body, center your mind, and ground yourself in the fundamentals and watch your practice bloom. Hatha can be translated in two ways. One as "willful" or "forceful," the second as "sun" and "moon." In these translations, we see the representation of the yoga of activity and the yoga of balance. In our Hatha yoga online collection, you'll discover practices designed to bring attention to your breath, manipulate the flow of energy, and align your body and mind. In the physical realm, Hatha yoga uses conscious movement to balance strength and flexibility. Emotionally, this practice calms our nervous system and cleanses our minds of stress and tension to leave you with a feeling of well-being. In this series of Hatha yoga videos, you'll discover a powerful tool for self-transformation. Enhance the way you think, feel, and experience life by learning to be more present in each unfolding moment. Each posture will elevate your level of consciousness while increasing your strength and flexibility. Open your spine and experience a renewed sense of vitality as energy channels flow through you, unrestricted. Explore our Hatha yoga online videos to calm your mind and form a deeper connection with your body.
Bring your shoulders, hips, and heels into a straight line (imagine that there is a straight line from your head to heels). Keep your shoulders over your wrists. Engage your abdominals. Press your palms into the ground to engage your triceps and biceps. Press your shoulder blades down the back, and lengthen your sternum forward to keep your chest open. Look toward the front of the mat.

We wanted to make sure our top picks would be easy to clean and durable (no mid-session mat shrapnel here!) We found that more porous, open-cell mat surfaces tended to be grippier, but were also harder to clean — they tend to absorb everything, like a giant sponge. Smooth, closed-cell surfaces tend to be easier to clean, but may be more slippery. The sweet spot is a mat that’s just grippy enough but doesn’t hold onto dirt and debris.
Both yoga and Pilates have lots to offer advanced exercisers, who can benefit from the improved core strength and body awareness that are typical results of training in these areas. Using mats and equipment from Power Systems, exercisers of all levels will improve their posture, flexibility, and agility. Yoga and Pilates have also been shown to reduce back pain, which is an increasing problem as we age. Pilates exercises develop strong core muscles, which include the deep abdominal muscles along the spine. In contrast to traditional weight training workouts, Pilates focuses on elongating and strengthening muscles while improving both elasticity and joint mobility. The result is a reduced chance of injury.
Price is an important factor when considering a yoga mat. If you’re a new yogi, it might make sense to choose a more affordable mat with fewer frills. But it’s also good to consider longevity vs. initial cost. All of our top picks are durable and can withstand heavy use for many classes to come, so putting down more money upfront might help you avoid having to replace a cheaper mat later.
What it is: OneOEight is a subscription-based online yoga studio founded by the very well-known yogi Rachel Brathen (i.e. @yoga_girl on Instagram). OneOEight — which has tons of teachers, including Brathen — divides their classes by mood, duration, teacher, focus, destination, and style, which makes it really easy to choose the classes that work best for you. Plus, many of the classes — which range from group classes to classes with just a teacher — are filmed in soothing locations, like the beach or a plant-filled room, which helps set a calming tone from the beginning. And the platform also offers recipe and travel recommendations in addition to yoga and meditation.
This video’s racked up more than a million views for one reason: It rocks. California-based yogi Tim Senesi kills it with this total-body vinyasa flow, which is geared for beginner to intermediate yogis (though it does include some more advanced arm-balance poses, like twisted crow). His super-specific direction makes it easy to follow and so enjoyable. (via Fightmaster Yoga)
… However, I was immediately skeptical of the opacity of a marketing phrase “non-Amazon rubber” which usually means Indonesian and Malaysian rubber. There is a significant problem of illegal logging, slash and burn clearing of primary rainforests, besides the 'usual' associated losses of flora and fauna, it results in a hazardous seasonal haze that covers much of lower Southeast Asia. A topic that deserves more turning over.
Instructor Amira Freidson told us that a standard-size yoga mat is 68 inches long — just long enough for someone who’s five-foot-eight. To make sure you’re not too cramped during practice, check to see if your whole body fits on the mat while lying down with your face towards the ceiling. While there are no benefits to using a too-small mat, extra-large mats may be good for working on your flexibility: Instructor Giovanna Abraham says, “For more experienced yogis who have been practicing for 2-5 years, a longer mat would definitely be helpful — for instance, in giving them greater space to extend deeper into their poses.”
