At 5.5 pounds and 4.2 millimeters, the Liforme is relatively light and thin for a partly-rubber mat. Our more experienced testers thought it was “the perfect thickness,” though one added, “I think if other people had more sensitive joints, it would be slightly painful.” If you need more cushion, we’d recommend the Hugger Mugger Para Rubber Mat or the Jade Fusion Mat.
This yoga video helps us see how authoritarianism slips into our world through our communities. It's a longer yoga set, but will help you understand and work with the authoritarian personality traits in you or your community. This video relies on the work of John Elmore, who can be heard discussing Passive Authoritarianism here: https://kpfa.org/episode/against-the-grain-june-4-2018/ *This video comes with free access to our introduction and warm-up videos.
A yoga mat's material affects its stickiness, durability, comfort, texture, and whether or not it’s environmentally friendly. PVC is cheaper and more durable but may be exposed to toxins during manufacturing and be less beneficial for the environment. Eco-friendly materials tend to be more expensive and degrade more quickly but are both free of toxins and more sustainable.
Start in mountain pose. Step your left foot back three to four feet and place it down at a 45-degree angle, so that your back left arch is in line with your right heel. Keep your chest and hips facing forward to the front of the mat. Bend your front knee to a 90-degree angle directly over the ankle, with your toes pointing forward. Don’t bend the knee past the ankle.
Expert recommendation: Sri Dharma's Mittra's series of classes, like this one, which cover Asana, Yoga Nidra, Pranayama and meditation. "Sri Dharma worked for close to a year exploring and sequencing the Asana classes in particular. They represent his most current thinking on Asana practice as of now." —Adam Frei, Program Manager of Dharma Yoga New York Center
Start in warrior 2 pose: left foot is back and left leg is straight. Right knee is bent at a 90-degree angle directly over the ankle, and right toes are pointing forward. Chest and hips are squared to the left side. Left arm is reaching back and right arm is reaching forward, so that they are parallel to the mat in a “T” position with palms facing down. Engage your abs.
Instructor Amira Freidson told us that a standard-size yoga mat is 68 inches long — just long enough for someone who’s five-foot-eight. To make sure you’re not too cramped during practice, check to see if your whole body fits on the mat while lying down with your face towards the ceiling. While there are no benefits to using a too-small mat, extra-large mats may be good for working on your flexibility: Instructor Giovanna Abraham says, “For more experienced yogis who have been practicing for 2-5 years, a longer mat would definitely be helpful — for instance, in giving them greater space to extend deeper into their poses.”
While the holidays are amazing, they inevitably come with their own unique set of stressors, from family drama to gift shopping. Taking time for yourself is especially important during stressful times, and yoga can help. In this video, Equinox trainer Noemi Henriquez demonstrates an 11-minute flow that was specifically designed to challenge your body and help you unwind during the busy holiday season.

The mat’s open-cell design provides an excellent textured feel, but it also absorbs moisture, meaning you’ll have to dedicate more time to keeping it clean. It’s perfect for home practice, but you may not want to lug it around because it is pretty darn heavy. The natural rubber also comes with a few trade-offs. The Jade Fusion Yoga Mat has a distinct rubber smell that takes time to go away, it loses its stickiness if left in the direct sun, it won’t last as long as some synthetic mats, and it’s near the top of the range in terms of price.
It is not easy to recreate the feel that a rubber mat provides, and the Aurorae Synergy isn’t as supportive or stable as its rubber competitors. The mat can move around under your hands and feet if you put it microfiber-side-down, and you’ll slide if you use it microfiber-side-up in dry conditions. It’s also a challenge keeping it clean, since it absorbs so much sweat, but this might be worth it for hot yogis who are tired of slipping during sweaty practices.
Yoga is an incredible workout: not only does it increase flexibility, strengthen muscles, and calm your mind, but it can also seriously whittle your waist, ease lower back pain, improve blood pressure and cholesterol, even boost your immune system. But while the list of health benefits is long, not everyone has the time, money, or patience to fit regular yoga classes into their workout routines. To the rescue: these free online yoga videos let you reap yoga's many health perks without leaving the comfort of your living room. The best part? They start at just 5 minutes long, so you can fit in a sequence anytime, whether it's first thing in the morning or while you wait for dinner to cook. Pick one (or a few!) to practice daily and learn for yourself how yoga can benefit your mind and body.
I bought this mat around 2 years ago when I started actively practicing. It has been through a lot with me, even a yoga teacher training! The pattern on the mat is beautiful and soothing, always gives me a good vibe when I roll the mat out. It has been a long time so it has gotten some little cracks in it, and over time it can feel thin when you need to be on the mat for an entire day. But I still love it because of the sentimental values. Now I am back to buy another one from Hugger Mugger – probably a thicker one.
If you liked Erin Motz’s routine (listed above) but are craving some runner-focused R&R, this longer sequence has your name all over it. As instructor Goldie Kaufenberg mentions in her intro, this plan targets the pelvis and the body below it through gentle twisting and core work. After going through the 48-minute sequence, you’ll feel longer and more limber—the perfect complement to any endurance workout. We’re also big fans of the fact that she gives you options for the poses, walking you through the modifications you might need. (via Lululemon)
Celebrity yoga instructor Hilaria Baldwin is all about using yoga to combine fitness with mind-body balance. "Thank you, thank you, thank you! Everyone was so nice and helpful! Not only was I able to email the staff to set up a time to come by and visit since I would only be in town for a short time, but then when I showed up everyone was beyond helpful in making sure we found the right items. Laura helped me at the store and went back and forth between the stock room and a make shift dressing room so I could try on a variety of items. She also helped my mom and I select our perfect yoga mats. She made us feel welcome and not like we were taking her away from her daily business by intruding. Laura also gave me a preview look at the Portland bridge leggings and then later that week sent me an email saying they were available on the website now. From start to finish everyone was incredible at Evolve! Thank you" (via Resellerratings.com)
